Mixed Media Christmas Cards - Challenge Post

Hello.  I hope all of you had a fantastic Christmas yesterday.  This year's Christmas with my family was the craziest holiday celebration ever... and not in a good way. In all honesty, I am sick of seeing ambulances and EMT's on Christmas.  This is the second year in a row that a family member had to be rushed to the hospital on Christmas.  Hoping next year our family can have a normal holiday celebration.  For now, I am glad that Christmas is over.... I love the holidays, but not the drama or medical problems that pop up during the festivities.

Today I thought I would share a couple last minute Christmas cards I made on Christmas Eve.  These cards were relatively simple and cheap to make. I used a lot of materials already on hand including scrapbook paper and lace.  I did purchase some felt reindeer and paper poinsettia flowers to embellish the cards. All other stickers and embellishments were from my crafting stash.

The materials I used:
Various glitter scrapbook papers
 Kraft paper
Tombow glue
Pop dots (foam adhesive squares)
Alphabet stickers
"Warm Wishes" holiday stamp
Black ink pad
Glitter glue
Lace
Felt reindeer
Paper flowers
Velum

The first card I made has a simple red mat and glitter paper background for added sparkle. I wrapped a 1" thick strip of velum around the background paper before gluing it to the mat paper.  I was originally going to only add one flower and a ribbon bow, but loved these paper poinsettias so much that I added three.  All of the flowers were adhered to the card with pop dots. I used a stamped sentiment for the greeting on the card.  I used pop dots to adhere the matted sentiment to the card.  I love the dimension that pop dots can add to the card. The final step in making this card was gluing the entire matted card front to the kraft paper card.  I discovered Tombow glue on a youtube tutorial a few months ago and am hooked.  It is the only glue I use for cardmaking.  I highly recommend it.

The second card is similar in layout to the first card.  I used beautiful glitter papers for the mat and background.  Instead of velum, I wrapped lace around the background paper.  I added a cute lace bow to add interest and dimension.  I wanted to make this card masculine for my brother, so I did not add paper flowers or snowflakes.  Instead I added an adorable felt reindeer diecut.  I purchased a package of six holiday felt reindeer at Hobby Lobby for $1.24. I adhered the reindeer to the card using pop dots. Instead of adding a stamped sentiment to the card, I used light blue glitter alphabet stickers to add the word NOEL.  When I was satisfied with the placement of everything, I glued the card front to the kraft paper card.

A Few Handmade Mixed Media Christmas Cards - Challenge Post

Good evening everyone.  I just want to share a few Christmas cards that I made over the past week for friends and family.  These cards were relatively simple and cheap to make.  I ended up using scrapbook paper and ribbon I already had.  I did purchase some diecut snowflakes, and paper poinsettia flowers to embellish the cards. All other gems, stickers, and embellishments were from my crafting stash.

The materials I used:

Pop dots (foam adhesive squares)
Ribbon
Winter and alphabet stickers
"Warm Wishes" holiday stamps
Black and brown ink pads

Pearl and gemstone stickers

 The first card features the layout I used the most this season when creating Christmas cards.  The main focus of this card is a tree image that I cut out from old scrapbook paper. This card layout also has a vintage key ribbon and bow embellishment. I used a brown ink pad to distress the edges of the tree image.  All of my cards this year have different mats and backgrounds.  I tried to use metallic and glitter papers as much as possible. This card has a stamped sentiment (that was used in most of the cards I made) and pearl accents. This layout is extremely simple... I had no problems manufacturing a bunch of similar cards quickly.  You could use a family photo or old Christmas card image instead of the tree image I chose to use.

This card has a similar layout to the card above, except the sentiment replaces the image.  This greeting card features a diecut snowflake and paper poinsettia flower.  The stamped sentiment is the same as the cards above. This card was embellished with clear gemstone stickers and a burgundy ribbon.  Just like the card above, I was able to quickly create a bunch of cards using this layout.

The layout for this card is the same as the first two cards, except their is no ribbon detail.  Instead, I used white lace behind the winter tree chipboard sticker.  Both the sentiment sticker and chipboard tree image used to create this card came from a winter scrapbooking kit.  I added pearls to this card to add a little extra bling.  I decided to make several winter cards this year as apposed to only Christmas cards.  I usually only make cards for close friends and family, but this year I wanted to give cards out to my doctors, mail man, city bus drivers, and co-workers. There were a lot of people who helped me this year both before and after surgery, so I wanted to give them all cards as a way of saying thanks.

 Here are a couple more winter cards with a horizontal layout.  The top card features snowflake diecuts, wreath ribbon, and a sentiment from a winter scrapbook kit. The bottom card features purple ribbon, a stamped sentiment, diecut snowflakes, and gemstone accents.  Almost all of the horizontal Christmas cards I made this year feature this layout, or a slight variance to this layout.  Just like the vertical cards, all of the horizontal cards have different mats and background papers.

The weather here in Wisconsin has been unusual for this time of year.  Instead of snow and ice we have had thunderstorms and flooding. Technique Tuesday - Quick And Beautiful Christmas Card Video

Hello everyone.  I hope all of you had a fabulous day today.  I had the day off and spent the majority of the day online.  I found a couple deals online, and before I knew it, the day was nearly gone.  I am glad that I was finally able to start my Christmas shopping.... better late than never.  Tonight I was going to share a handmade ornament tutorial, but I spent way too much time shopping online today.  I was planning on having all of the ornaments done today, but will have to finish making them tomorrow after work.  These handmade ornaments are gifts for all of my friends and family members.  I will still share the ornament tutorial on my blog in the next couple days, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that post!

Since I was not able to post the ornament tutorial tonight, I thought I would share a card making video I found on Youtube last week.  I will be making all of my Christmas cards this year, and felt really inspired by this video. The card in the video is really easy to make, but looks extravagant and expensive.  This video makes me want to dig right into card making.... well... after I finish my ornaments of course.

Snowman Card - One Way To Use An Intaglio Print

Happy Monday everyone!  I have been so busy today, but managed to finish a winter card inspired by nature. I used an intaglio print I created a few years back as the main image for this card.  Although the intaglio print is a physical print, the card was created digitally.  I love mixing physical art with digital art!  This is a great example of how you can incorporate art from journal pages or sketchbooks into other projects.  You can add your physical art to digital cards or scrapbook pages without destroying your original artwork. If you like something you have previously made, why not digitally alter it or make it into something new.  That is exactly what I did when I created this digital card.

 I absolutely love how the finished card turned out.  I started this project by first scanning the snowman print using my all in one printer. This intaglio print was etched on a copper plate using resin and multiple acid baths.  This particular image was printed on Reeves BFK paper via a manual printing press.  I originally designed this image three years ago for a print exchange hosted by the University I graduated from.  Ironically, this print was one of the last intaglio prints I ever created.  Intaglio printing requires a lot of specialized materials and tools making it extremely difficult to do at home.  If given the opportunity, I would gladly enter another intaglio print exchange. The image below is the original print used in the print exchange.

Once the image was scanned and saved to my computer, I was able to alter it using Pixlr online.  The finished image below consists of 6 digital layers including a grey blue background, a brown textured layer, a snowflake print, a snowflake digital stamp, the original scanned image, and finally a messy glitter border.

I loved the digitally altered print so much that I decided to turn it into a digital card.  I only added a couple simple embellishments to accent the finished card.  I also added a sentiment to the card, but I think I like the card better without it.

Freebie Friday - Printable Cherry Cupcake Birthday Card

Good evening!  I hope everyone is having a fantastic Friday.  Before I talk about the free downloadable birthday card, I first want to say thank you to all my followers and blog readers.  I have been struggling lately with work and other life obstacles that are making it hard for me to blog consistently.  I do try to post to the blog when I can, but there have been times over the last couple weeks when I just couldn't do it. I am really hoping that all the chaos in my life settles down soon so that I can post to the blog daily. I was hoping to post a throw back Thursday yesterday, but just didn't get the chance.  My boyfriend has been sick with pancreatitis all week and was hospitalized twice. Between work, visiting my boyfriend in the hospital, and hosting his family at my house this week, I hardly had time to sleep let alone work on anything creative.  I may start posting to the blog in advance, depending on the projects I'm working on and art I want to share with all of you. I will try to figure out a way blog consistently again!

Printable Greeting Card Freebie

Good afternoon everyone.  I hope all of you are having a wonderful afternoon!  The weather here was gorgeous today.  Couldn't ask for a more beautiful day.  Work went surprisingly well, but I am still dealing with a lot of pain. My doctor did notify my work to allow me to sit when I need to and that has helped tremendously.  Still have four long work days to go, so hoping I can survive the pain the rest of this week.

Freebie Friday - Carving Memories Halloween Card

Hello Everyone!  I hope all of you are having a fabulous Friday!  Fall is in the air here in Wisconsin.  We have had some chilly weather here to remind us that winter is on its way.  I absolutely LOVE October and wouldn't want it to be any other month.  For me, there is nothing better than hoodie and hot chocolate weather. The majority of the trees are still green where I live, but by the end of the month they will be bare.  Hopefully I will remember to post pictures of my back yard when the trees really start to change.  I know many of you live in different climates and do not get the chance to experience the same autumn we do here in Wisconsin.

Today I wanted to share with you another printable Halloween card.  I absolutely love sending holiday cards to my close friends and family who live far away.  I find that printing cards and embellishing them myself is much cheaper than buying pre-made cards. Happy Halloween Card Freebie!

Happy Thursday Everyone!  I hope you are all having a great night.  I am trying to enjoy my evening, but life has me stressed to the max! Due to my surgery and medical expenses, money has been super tight around here for the last 5 months.  I really miss going to work and having a steady income.  I know, I know. I shouldn't be wishing myself back to work so fast.  I think part of the reason I am so stressed is that I am stuck in the house the majority of the time.  I don't drive, and walking with crutches everywhere just plain sucks (although it is better than cruising around on a knee scooter).  If my armpits feel up to it, I may visit the library or store tomorrow.

Despite being stressed out and a bit melancholy today, I did make some progress on the Halloween digital scrapbook kit and Project Life cards I've been working on.  I love Halloween, and I couldn't wait to start creating these digital kits.  The freebie card I am sharing with you today was created with the My Memories Suite Software.  The witch and black background paper are included in the software.  The moon and orange background paper were designed by me and are part of the Halloween scrapbook kit I am creating.  The spider web and Happy Halloween sign are digital scrapbook embellishments I had acquired a couple years ago.

Surgery Update & Autumn Card Freebie!

Hello everyone.  This last week has been crazy which is why I haven't posted a whole lot to the blog. Besides being sick, I also had to travel to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for an update on my ankle fusion surgery.  The trip was super fun, and I am no longer in a cast!  After four months of using a knee scooter to get around, I am beyond excited to start walking again.  My foot is aligned completely different than it used to be, so I am finding it a little painful and awkward to walk on it.  The air cast boot they gave me does help a lot, but I would like to be able to wear a complete pair of shoes again.

Being as spiritual as I am, I did encounter a unique anomaly while at the Mayo Clinic.  Firstly, I want to mention that three weeks prior, part of my ankle was failing to fuse.  The doctor's were unaware of how long it would take to heal, or if it would heal at all.  Generally, it takes 8-12 weeks for two bones to fuse together.  Since one joint was failing to fuse after 13 weeks, I was told not to be surprised if I was in a cast for 6 months or longer.  I was so nervous about what the new x-rays would reveal, and what it would mean for me physically and financially.  The first part of my appointment entails having my cast cut off and going to x-ray.  When my cast was cut off, I saw that there was a white feather inside my cast between the fiberglass exterior and cotton gauze interior.  I am not sure how it got there, but it was there.  Once the cast was removed, my leg was cleaned and I was prepped for x-rays. The standing x-rays were painful.  I waited for my surgeon for over an hour after that.  When he finally entered the room, he told me I was done.  Huh?  He showed me the x-rays and all of my joints were fused together...even that suborn joint that failed to fuse just three weeks prior.  He kept asking me what I did differently to make it heal so fast. Of course I have no answers... I did nothing differently.  It turned out to be quiet the spectacle as other doctors and nurses stopped by to see.  The nurse fitted me for an air cast boot after that and sent me on my way.  After leaving the hospital, I stopped back at the hotel to shave that leg.  You would not believe the forest of hair that can grow when you don't shave your leg for over four months.  When I took off my boot at the hotel, I found another white feather nestled between my boot and sock.  Since Thursday, I have found 5 white feathers including one next to me on the bed just moments ago.

Besides all the medical stuff this week, I did create a freebie.  Since I missed freebie Friday, I decided to post the freebie today.  This is an autumn card I digitally created using various digital embellishments I have acquired and created. This image can be printed out and adhered to a blank card or printed directly onto a blank card. I do want to mention that if you are interested in creating digital cards or scrapbook pages, but don't know where to start, stop by www.pixelscrapper.com.  They have a ton of free digital papers, flowers, journal cards, and embellishments that you can download for free when you create an account.  What is awesome about their site is that you have the opportunity to use downloaded digital items commercially.  This card was actually created using one of their journal cards.
